Gallery in the Park Altona Manitoba's Hidden Gem

The Gallery in the Park is a hidden gem in the Town of  Altona, Manitoba and is well worth a visit. Sculpture Gardens waterfall   I took a day trip to  Altona, Manitoba   to see the Sunflower Festival held between the 27th and 29th of August, and ended up, by pure chance, in the Gallery in the Park. The Gallery in the Park is adjacent to theAltona Centennial park which is where I thought I was headed. Gallery in the Park  A stately white colonial house  stood close to the entrance of the park in all its majesty. Beyond the house I caught a glimpse of waterfalls and sculptures amidst a glorious landscape. I decided to leave the outside for last and enter the building through a closed door. I was greeted by a friendly young man and proceeded to view the first exhibit by Artist Don McMaster. A  truly wonderful exhibit which chronicles the life of David Thompson who was a Canadian explorer and map maker. McMaster tells the story of McDonald on canvas using the actua

Eating Vegan in Vegas

The Fashion Show Mall Image by Ashauntae Unless you can afford to stay at the upscale Wynn hotel on the Las Vegas strip and eat pricey vegan food then you will have a tough time in Las Vegas if you are a vegan. I mention the Wynn because the owner is vegan and they carry, from my understanding, a very good vegan menu.; But since this is the penny pincher bloog, I have to look at a less expensive way of eating while in Vegas. The Chin Chin resturant at the New York New York where we stayed can substitute most of their meat dishes with a vegan menu, you just have to ask. However, no one wants to eat off the same menu daily and so the search was on for other vegan friendly places to eat. Also at the New York New York is a Burger joint which makes a mean vegan burger with beans and other vegetables. It is quite a hefty burger and I was unable to finish it along with the herb and garlic fries I ordered. The best vegan option I found was at the Fashion Show Mall on the Las Vegas Strip. W

Dining in Vegas Horror Stories – The Hair in my Vegetables

It was a bad food day for me in Vegas that included getting the wrong order three times and hair in my food for dinner. I gave away the story line before I started. The title says it all, hair in your food. Not a big deal if it is your hair, it is more an issue when it is some unknown hair. Now I have talked in my other blogs about eating cheap and healthy in Vegas but you already know that food is not cheap in Vegas. So we were pleased to purchase a coupon that would give us 25% off the cost of a buffet at the Monte Carlo on the Vegas strip. After we were seated We quickly filled our plates with the usual buffet fare. We were waiting for our server to take our drink order prior to going to the buffet but she was no where in sight. I had a full dish of grans and vegetables and started to work my way through. Wen I was down to 3/4 of the plate there it was nestled in the beans and squash  I was just about to put into my mouth, HAIR , two whole strands. When I showed it to my partner

My Dining Horror Stories in Las Vegas - Denny's

So I am enjoying Vegas for the first time in my life and while I can think of some good things to say about Sin City, I can think about a lot of bad things , especially the food. We decided to visit the Denny's on the strip for breakfast - a late breakfast. It seems like most everyone visiting Vegas had the same idea. Line ups were long and the wait was abound 20 minutes but we decided to stick it out. As a vegan, I was happy to see there was a grilled vegetable dish on the menu that came with egg whites. I ordered it without the egg whites and would you know  after awaiting another 15 minutes inside to be served, it came with the eggs. I returned it, apologies from the server were graciously accepted and I waited for my re-made dish. Would you believe that the dish came back, minus the eggs or so I thought. The dish did look like it was dug through and beaten up to some extent and when I decided to put my suspicions to the test by looking through the vegetables, there were chu

Tips for Eating Cheap and Healthy on your Las Vegas Vacation

It was a shock to my wallet when  I first saw the menus at the las Vegas resort on my trip.  Once in the hotel, you are somewhat held ransom; everything is there and it is more convienient to just dine in. On your first night at the Las Vegas resort, you are tired and hungry so a $10.00 hamburger doesn't seem too bad. However, if you plan your stay carefully you can eat less expensive if you are prepared to venture away from the confines of the resort. Eat away from the resort as often as you can. If you try to rise early in the morning you can find a nearby diner which will give you a great breakfast for about $5.00. Try the Miracle Mile shops at Planet Hollywood. Eat at Food courts. If you are out anyway, food courts have very affordable menus even though much of the food may be fast, you can still select great salads and healthy wraps. Budget your Food. You can set a spending limit on dining while in Las Vegas as well as a limit on how much you eat. If you eat small meals w

Vegas On a Budget - Beware of Timeshare Offers

On my my first day in Las Vegas, we were bombarded by any and everyone wanting to give you something free. I quickly remembered the saying that there is no free lunch or that there is nothing really free, but I also learned that you don't always get what you are promised. So free tickets to a Cirque du Soleil show sounded like a great idea. Free was much better than the $160. it would coast me and my pardner. So we chatted with Becky at the New York New York Tahati desk and we weren't sold on giving up 3 hours of our day even for concert tickets. Since we weren't quite sold, she asked what else she can add to the pot, We told her that we would really like to see the\Grand Canyon ona day trip. She quickly responded, that she could throw that in withthetickets for $50.00. Too good to be true but she was so convincing that we were swayed. According to Becky, we were getting a 300.00 dollar deal for only $50,00. She went over the deal with us saying this is what you are g

Dinner for One - Strange New Years Eve Traditions

Dinner for one is the story about an upper class senior citizen who hosts a dinner for her friends each year. Its popularity perhaps has to do with senior sex, a nutty old lady and lots of drinking. Dinner for One - Strange New Years Eve Traditions
