Gallery in the Park Altona Manitoba's Hidden Gem

The Gallery in the Park is a hidden gem in the Town of  Altona, Manitoba and is well worth a visit.

I took a day trip to  Altona, Manitoba   to see the Sunflower Festival held between the 27th and 29th of August, and ended up, by pure chance, in the Gallery in the Park. The Gallery in the Park is adjacent to theAltona Centennial park which is where I thought I was headed.

Gallery in the Park

A stately white colonial house  stood close to the entrance of the park in all its majesty. Beyond the house I caught a glimpse of waterfalls and sculptures amidst a glorious landscape.I decided to leave the outside for last and enter the building through a closed door.

I was greeted by a friendly young man and proceeded to view the first exhibit by Artist Don McMaster. A  truly wonderful exhibit which chronicles the life of David Thompson who was a Canadian explorer and map maker. McMaster tells the story of McDonald on canvas using the actual diary entries of the explorer.

Cliff Derksen Sculpture

On the second floor of the building there was a touching exhibit by Cliff Derksen who is the father of Candace Derksen. For those who don’t know, Candace Derksen was brutally murdered at age 13 and over two decades ago and it was only in the last couple years that her killer was brought to justice with the help of DNA testing. The entire exhibit tells the story of this tragedy  with vivid images in drawings and sculptures. Other featured art works in the beautifully restored heritage house, were by local artists in a variety of medium.

Outside, the sculpture garden is a place of serenity and awe.  The works of local artists and the famous Leo Moll are featured. The grounds are expertly manicured, beautifully landscaped with rippling and cascading water features.

The Gallery in the Park was the brainchild of the Friesen Corporation in 2005 and opened its doors in 2008 with the help of numerous volunteers, public and private partnerships.  The Schwartz house which houses the gallery in the park was built in 1902 and moved from its original location to the park where it was restored. The gallery and sculpture gardens are well worth the one and a half hour drive from Winnipeg  and best of all it is free.

The Cattail Cafe at the Seven Clans Casino, Warroad MN - A Review

Cattail café Seven Clans Casino, Warroad, review - image Google The Cattail café is conveniently located next to the casino and across from the gift shop. Here you can grab breakfast, lunch or dinner on the go in an informal, pedestrian type setting. The food The menu at the Cattail has your usual burgers, fish and chips and chicken dinners. There is a marked absence of vegetables and coleslaw seems to be the closest thing to green you will see. Don't expect any special treatment if you are vegan or gluten free . You don't always get what is on the menu as it seems they are not always able to prepare what you ask for and bluntly tell you they can't get you what's on the menu without giving a reason. I ate there once and had the fish and chips which was okay. Service at the Cattail Service was mixed when I visited. The serving staff behind the counter were pleasant enough but not very accommodating. I asked if they had veggie burgers and the guy looked at...

Natural wonders of the Bahamas – The Boiling Hole

Boiling Hole, Bahamas, Image credit Bahamas.com Google advanced images The Bahamas will leave you dumbstruck by the site of their natural wonders one of which is The Boiling Hole. Tidal conditions in the clear lake called the Boiling hole, created burps and bubbles. As the tide flows out to the sea, the water coming out of the cave causes bubbles on the surface.   When the tide flows inward, a whirlpool is created by the water rushing into the cave system. There is a boardwalk for viewing and a ladder to get closer to this wonder.   You may also get a glimpse of spy rays, baby sharks and the many birds nesting in the mangroves. The Boiling Hole is in Hepburn Town, Eight Mile Rock Grand Bahama Island.

A visit to the Pirate Museum in Nassau Bahamas

pirate museum, Nassau, Bahamas, image Ashauntae Located in the heart of downtown Nassau is the Pirate Museum and a must see for tourists who want a glimpse into the history of piracy especially as it relates to the Caribbean.  Inside the museum you will find a true replica pirate ship which hosts most of the exhibits on two floors. Enter if you dare. It can be like entering a haunted house with sights and sounds of an era past on a pirate ship. The first room on the ship belongs to the ship's carpenter who had the most important job on the ship. The ship holds many historical facts about famous pirates, their conquests and their demise. There are replica jails, re-enactment image  of a gruesome surgery at sea, and other pirate artifacts. On the outside of the museum you can take your photo locked in the stocks. All in all it was a very informative experience.
